Guest post by wife IEP and school with husband work section

I wish schools could mold into the child rather than want the child to fit the mold they have. David has a hard time sitting still, writing, and looking like he is paying attention (he usually looks like he is not but really is) but he also has a very high IQ and the last testing put him above grade level in all subjects. Reading had 3 categories and in one of them his grade equivalent was GREATER than 12th grade 9th month. This child who can read well and has great answers can't write a paragraph without seeming like his brain is going to run away. Have him verbally give you an answer and you are in for a books worth of information. Medication comes up in these meetings all the time, we tried before and they were bad. Previously the meds made him see things, slow down, and drop his grades. I am afraid to try again but I am also afraid we might be holding him back from greatness he could accomplish academically by not trying. Why can't we just try some medical marijuana? Just kidding... What are your opinions cyber world on medicating a child with AS who is getting good grades?

More to add to this is that all the staff who were involved in this process always have great things to say about his intelligence, vocabulary, and understanding of things well above his grade level. He tells jokes none of his peers understand but all the teachers love. He has been compared to as like talking to a high school student or adult. He has been mentioned that he shortens things and uses larger words to make definitions to try and lessen his writing in class and his definitions are better than the ones to be copied. The IEP now states he can have a scribe (this is so teachers and us can write for him) to help him get the real answer he has out for questions and not just a shortened version so he could write less.

My husband also AS has been working at a new job for a while now. He seems to really enjoy it. I worry though because his social difficulties have cost jobs before. He is a temp and I hope they hire him in, he always does his job where he works (in all jobs) really well. People don't understand the social issues with AS and workplace. He is also looking into going to school for air traffic control or engineering of some type, it will be hard with a job and family but I know he can do anything if he sets his mind to it.
